Request: Reader loses a close friend and Balthazar comforts them

“Y/N, you coming? Or did you want to sit this one out?”

You jolted out of your numb daze to see Sam looking at you sympathetically. “Oh, uh, right. The hunt. Um, do you mind if I stay here?”

“Of course not,” Sam replied softly. “Are you ok here on your own while we go? You don’t want us to call Cas or anything and get him to stay with you?”

You shrugged. “Cas is probably busy. I’m ok.”

Sam gave you a long concerned look before ruffling your hair gently. “Alright, kiddo. We’ll be back tomorrow sometime. Just call us if you need anything, ok? Even if it’s just someone to talk to.”

You nodded, forcing a smile to prove you were ok. You didn’t want them to be distracted by worrying about you for the entire hunt. They had more important things to worry about.

As soon as they were gone and you heard the sound of the Impala’s engine fading into the distance, you took yourself into your room, shutting the door. Once you felt safe, you curled up on your bed, buried your face in your arms and sobbed. No one was there to hear you. You let it all out, shoulders shaking, fingers tangled in your hair.

You were so wrapped up in your despair you didn’t hear the flap of wings. A hand touched your shoulder, and you let out a squeak of surprise, twisting round to face the newcomer.

“Easy there,” Balthazar chuckled, raising his hands calmingly. “Are you alright?”

“Does it look like I’m alright?” you snapped, then caught yourself. “Sorry. It’s just…” your voice broke. Dammit. Now you were crying again, bringing your knees up to your chest, wrapping your arms around them as you broke down once more.

“Hey, hey…” Balthazar sat on the bed beside you, pulling you into his arms. You didn’t resist; your previous encounters with Balthazar had often been crazy and pretty stressful, but at other times he had shown that he cared, and you had always had a soft spot for the angel. You curled into his arms, sobbing into his shirt as he rubbed your back gently. “Hey, it’s gonna be ok.”

He held you until your sobs began to quieten, his fingers playing gently with your hair. You had never seen this side of the angel before, and you’d never known he could be so caring. As you began to calm down, he spoke again. “I heard what happened. I’m so sorry, Y/N.”

“Since when did you care?” you sniffed.

Balthazar sighed. “I do care, Y/N. True, I’m not very good at showing it,” he admitted, “but I care about you. Against my better judgement, I even care about those two Winchester boys. But I hate to see you upset.”

You forced a weak smile. “Thanks,” you said quietly, turning away. “I just… I miss them.”

“I know,” Balthazar replied. “I know. But I saw them just today, in Heaven. They’re happy there. You were there too, by the way.”

You sniffed. “I was?”

He nodded. “So what do humans like when they’re sad? Hot chocolate? Cookies?”

You smiled genuinely this time. “I don’t think I can eat anything.”

“Hot chocolate then.” Balthazar snapped his fingers, and a piping hot mug of hot chocolate appeared on your bedside table. You grinned.

“That’s a pretty handy talent,” you said, picking up the mug and taking a tiny sip. It was the perfect temperature, just cool enough to drink.

The angel clicked his fingers again, and your radio came to life. You hadn’t used it in so long you had no idea what station it was on, and the song from Titanic, My Heart Will Go On, came pouring out of the speakers. You almost choked on your hot chocolate with laughter as Balthazar quickly changed the station.

“I cannot stand that song,” he complained. “Ah, this is better.”

You smiled, leaning your head on his shoulder. “Thanks, Balthazar. You know, you’re not so bad, for an angel.”

“You’re not so bad for a human.”

You grinned, putting your hot chocolate back down. “Can we watch a movie?”

“Of course,” Balthazar replied. “Choose anything you want. If you don’t have it, all I need to do is snap my fingers and you’ll be watching it. Pretty cool, right?”

You nodded, giggling. “Yeah, that is pretty cool.” You glanced over at the stack of movies on your shelf, trying to decide on one to watch, while simultaneously thinking about how unexpected this was. You had never expected such concern and understanding from Balthazar. It felt pretty good to have a guardian angel at your side.

If I was in SPN, every time Balthazar was there I'd burst through the doors singing My Heart will Go On. This was amazing! There needs to be more Balthazar x Reader fics out there. And Crowley. <3
